Online Firefighter Class Scholarships

Times are tough, and attempting to attend school while balancing full-time jobs, families, and other obligations can be daunting. However, some reprieve can be found in Firefighter Scholarships. I have compiled a list of my research for as many ways to help with scholarships as I could find at the date of posting.

Couch Courses offers a scholarship opportunity for Florida State fire academies to offer to their top performers in class. These are the Brass Nozzle Award, and the Runner-up Award

They are awarded to the top two GPA’s in each respective fire academy class. There is no minimum GPA required to be rewarded a scholarship from Couch Courses.  Instead, it is up to each class to compete for the top two spots.

These scholarships have no expiration and allow the recipient to receive a whole slew of beneficial courses that are listed here.

If you are a student at a non-participating fire academy, tell them about this program; if you are affiliated with a Florida fire academy and would like to offer this free incentive to your students, please fill out a form located on our website at Fire Academy Scholarship Program Awards.

Lake Land Fire Department offers its Fire-Service Opportunity and Career for Under-served Students (FOCUS) Scholarship. The scholarship program has been offered by LFD since 2014 and is intended to provide the opportunity for a successful career in the fire service to deserving students who may not have had the opportunity otherwise due to financial hardship.

This scholarship is more directly related to residents near Lakeland Florida, as they name the school you are obligated to attend, but this scholarship covers:

  • Paid tuition to Ridge Career Center’s Fire Standard Program
  • Paid books and materials necessary for required coursework
  • Paid uniforms required for fire standards program
  • Direct mentorships by active duty LFD firefighters and administration
  • Paid exam fees for all exams.

The Firefighter Scholarship Program was developed by the Fire Chiefs’ Association of Broward County to assist students with funding to complete their education needed for a career in the Fire Service. The Fire Chiefs’ Association will make their scholarship support available to students attending Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic, Fire Prevention or Fire Academy programs.

In the State of Florida, and across the nation, the fire service is experiencing a shortage of qualified trained personnel.  In South Florida, with the combination of a cross-trained workforce and the turnover of existing personnel due to retirements, Broward County is feeling the effects of the shortage.

Due to the increasing cost of education and the amount of time required to complete the necessary training, the Fire Chiefs’ Association feels that its commitment and financial support to the Firefighter Scholarship Program can make a difference.
